An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, Maria, and stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.” The American scoffed. “I have an MBA from Harvard, and can help you,” he said. View Reflection 2.docx from BUS MISC at De La Salle Lipa. Engay, Joshua Mishael A. The man tells him that he's already been out and caught enough fish to last him several days. The Mexican Fisherman (amazing short story) The short story of The Mexican Fisherman was originally told by Heinrich Böll about an encounter between a tourist and a small fisherman on a European coast. I remember first hearing this inspiring story when I was in my “dream job” as a Dean of Students. For those curious, the story has been adopted and modified with a decided (and appropriate) American flavor over the years, but it appears that the origin of “The Mexican Fisherman” story was through a short story “Anekdote zur Senkung der Arbeitsmoral” (“Anecdote concerning the Lowering of Productivity”), published by a German writer, Heinrich Böll, in 1963. Enjoy the story – I’ll share a few thoughts after.

I FOUND EVEN OLDER ORIGINS OF THE STORY. It appears Heinrich Boll may have been inspired by a story written about 2000 years ago about events more than 300 years before that. The author was Plutarch. The story was about Pyrrhus, the one who gave us “Pyrrhic Victories“. You can compare it to the original here.

He was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize in 1967 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1972. When the fisherman arrived on land, the businessman complimented his catch.
