In this time of profound environmental transformation, humanities perspectives are urgently needed to help interpret and give meaning to the rapidly changing world around us. Humanities scholars have an opportunity to reshape how we think about environmental problems and “the environment” itself. Emergence of environmental humanities. Although the concepts and ideas underpinning environmental humanities date back centuries, the field consolidated under the name "environmental humanities" in the 2000s following steady developments of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s in humanities and social science fields such as literature, history, philosophy, gender studies, and anthropology. A concise overview of this multidisciplinary field, presenting key concepts, central issues, and current research, along with concrete examples and case studies. The emergence of the environmental humanities as an academic discipline early in the twenty-first century reflects the growing conviction that environmental problems cannot be solved by science and technology alone.
